Child Care Sick Child Care Click here for a printable versionSchools and most child care programs do not admit children with a contagious illness, so parents need to plan for those inevitable times when their child will become ill. You can expect a younger child to be sick more often. At UC Berkeley, accrued sick leave can be used to care for sick children. See the Family Friendly Policies sections of this Guide. You may also ask a relative, friend, or paid baby-sitter to come to your home to provide the care. In some communities, sick child care programs provide either an in-home provider with special health care services training, or a sick child " get well " center which provides a small group setting for recuperating children. If you live in Berkeley, Albany, or Emeryville you can call the Sick Child Care Program's 'Wheezles and Sneezles' at 526-SICK (526-7425). The Get Well Center is located in Albany Village. There is a sliding scale fee of $0-5/hr, and the Center can accomodate up to 10 children. This program can also dispatch trained care providers to your home for 8-hour shifts. Call the day before, if possible, during business hours. There is a $0-7/hr sliding fee scale for in-home care. You can also contact your local resource and referral agency for further information on sick child care.
