Letter from the Chancellor

(From the original 1997 publication)

October 15, 1997

Dear Faculty and Staff: Each day faculty and staff face the challenge of balancing their family and work responsibilities. This campus is committed to policies and programs that enable faculty and staff to be productive members of the campus community and to meet their family care obligations.

This publication, A Guide for Balancing Work and Family, is one step in an ongoing process of supporting parents and other family caregivers at the University of California, Berkeley. This process is guided primarily by the efforts of the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Dependent Care, which I have charged with advising me and academic and staff administrators on the broad spectrum of dependent care issues, ranging from child care to the care of the ill, disabled, and elderly.

I hope that you will find this Guide a useful resource and that you will join me in continuing to seek creative ways to make the Berkeley campus a family-friendly work environment.

Sincerely,
Robert M. Berdahl
Chancellor

The Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Dependent Care

The Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Dependent Care advises the campus administration on a broad range of issues concerning dependent care. Please go to the CACDC Home Page to learn about the membership, history, and accomplishments of this multidisciplinary, faculty/staff commmittee.

Acknowledgements and Background

This guide is the work of the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Dependent Care. It was developed with extensive input from the campus community. This is the third version of the Guide. The first version was published in 1992 and focused on policies, practices, programs, and childcare information for working parents. The second version, published in 1998, was expanded to include policies, benefits and resources on elder/adult dependent care. The first two versions were published as booklets and are still available in hardcopy.
